How Iconicity Helps People Learn New Words: Neural Correlates and Individual Differences in Sound-Symbolic Bootstrapping

چکیده
Introduction Iconicity, or the resemblance-based mapping between aspects of form and meaning, has long been marginalised in linguistic research due to the predominance of arbitrari-ness, where there is no connection between the form of a word and aspects of its meaning other than social convention [1]. For example, there is nothing iconic about the arbitrary word dog; d does not mean " four-legged " , o does not mean " pet " , and g does not mean " likes rolling in muddy puddles ". Nothing about the form of the word represents the real world meaning. In contrast, the Siwu words pim-bilii ('small belly') and pumbuluu (' enormous round belly')

People Can Create Iconic Vocalizations to Communicate Various Meanings to Naïve Listeners
The innovation of iconic gestures is essential to establishing the vocabularies of signed languages, but might iconicity also play a role in the origin of spoken words? Can people create novel vocalizations that are comprehensible to naïve listeners without prior convention? We launched a contest in which participants submitted non-linguistic vocalizations for 30 meanings spanning actions, huma...
متن کاملReading in People with Down syndrome: “visual route” or “phonological route”?
Abstract Background and Purpose: Many people with Down syndrome learn to read to some degree, but how they learn to read has been debated by researchers. Some researchers have argued that given the phonological deficits of people with Down syndrome and their stronger visual-spatial abilities, they rely on the “visual route” to learn to read, while others have shown that the “phonological ro...

متن کاملThe sound symbolism bootstrapping hypothesis for language acquisition and language evolution.
Sound symbolism is a non-arbitrary relationship between speech sounds and meaning. We review evidence that, contrary to the traditional view in linguistics, sound symbolism is an important design feature of language, which affects online processing of language, and most importantly, language acquisition. We propose the sound symbolism bootstrapping hypothesis, claiming that (i) pre-verbal infan...
متن کاملA New Approach to Detect Congestive Heart Failure Using Symbolic Dynamics Analysis of Electrocardiogram Signal
The aim of this study is to show that the measures derived from Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals many a time perform better than the same measures obtained from heart rate (HR) signals. A comparison was made to investigate how far the nonlinear symbolic dynamics approach helps to characterize the nonlinear properties of ECG signals and HR signals, and thereby discriminate between normal and cong...
